Inner Mongolia travel  

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is the earliest autonomous region in China. People call it Inner Mongolia for short. It is situated in the north of China. To the northwest, Inner Mongolia is bounded by Russia and Mongolia. To the south, east and north, it is bounded by Gansu Province, Ningxia Province, Shanxi Province, Shanxi Province, Hebe Province, Liaoning Province, Jilin Province, Heilongjina Province.

The altitude of Inner Mongolia Plateau is about 1000 meters. There are prosperous forests, endless grassland, rich farms, broad water, various animals and plants and countless treasures underground on this extensive land. People call the wide and shallow basin there as Tala. In the area of Hulunbeier Lake and Xilinguole River, that is the endless grassland. In the west Alashan, deserts and salt water lakes are distributed. To the east, it is the famous forests of Great Xing'anling. To the southeast of Great Xing'anling, there is the rich Liao River Plain. In the middle of Inner Mongolia Plateau, there is famous Yin Mountain and its branch Daqing Mountain. Their altitudes are both above 1,500 meters. Shannan Yellow River area and Dahei River area is the rich Hetao-Tumochuan Plain. To the south of Hetao-Tumochuan Plain, there is the well-known Ordos Plateau.  


There are 13 billion mu (1 mu equals 667 square meters) grassland in Inner Mongolia and it makes up half of the whole area of Inner Mongolia. The quantities of cattle and woolen, cashmere and camel hair are the No. 1 in China. In the place of Hetao, Tumochuan and West Liao River Plain are abundant in wheat, potatoes, sugar-beet and flax. Amount of wood in Great Xing'anling is 1/6 in China. 

In Inner Mongolia, mushrooms, Facai, liquorices, aniseeds, black sun flower seeds are very famous. The main agricultural crops are wheat, broom corn millet, millet, potatoes, sugar-beet, flax and sunflowers and so on. Inner Mongolia is the main producing area of sugar-beet and fax in China and the Hualaixi melon in Hetao is famous for aroma and sweet.

Inner Mongolia is also a rich- energy area. The amount of coal is the second in China.

And the industries in Inner Mongolia are full of the characteristics of pastoral area. They are tightly related with wool spinning, leather, milk, national handicrafts. The other industries are steel, mechanical and forest and the transportation is very convenient in this area. 

Population and nationalities

Up to the end of 2004, the total population in Inner Mongolia was 23.8435 million. There are 49 nationalities in all inhabit in Inner Mongolia, they are Mongolian Nationality, Han Nationality, Man Nationality, Hui Nationality, Dawoer Nationality, Elunchun Nationality, Korean Nationality and some other nationalities. The population of Han Nationality is 18.7294 million, Mongolian Nationality is 4.1708 million and other ethnic nationalities are 943,300 in total.


Up to the end of 2004, there are 80 A-grade tourist areas in Inner Mongolia. 7 in them like the Gegentala Grassland Tourist Center, Mausoleum of Jenghiz Khan (1162-1227, Mongol conqueror of most of Asia and of East Europe to the Dnieper River.) are 4 A-grade, 30 of them like Wusutu National Forest Park, Xilamuren Grassland Tourist Center, Huhenuoer Tourist Center are 3 grade. There are 165 star hotels. In them, 2 are 5 star, the Inner Mongolia Hotel and the Xincheng Hotel. And there are 292 tourist agencies, 8 best tourist cities in China like Huhehaote, Xilinhaote, and Manzhouli. The tourist scale of Inner Mongolia is becoming bigger and bigger now.
